The Little Meanings

The little bluebells, that live a few days,
endeared more than sunflower's searching rays,

Those little rivers, with meandering paths,
sound subtly soother than the tireless falls.

Inceptive little drops of monsoon rain,
are ever more comforting than the hurricanes,

And the little smiles that honestly rejoice,
remain fonder than laughter, that will others voice.

Although life's strand of facts and prophecies,
lay without a cohesive summary.

But, little conception's in us queer beings,
strive for new ventures and beginnings,

Adding the little memoirs into our strides,
assemble as beads to the strings of time.

With these little meanings, we create our verse,
adding to the proses of the Universe.

Under the Colourful Umbrella of Hope: Marine Drive, Mumbai

Under a colourful Umbrella,

Queens Necklace, Marine Drive

She sat under a colourful umbrella that brightened up the gloomy day on Marine Drive. It was perhaps in anticipation of abrupt showers or to shunt the noise behind her, Or, could it be something more…?

I sat a few feet away, along the edge, listening to the sound of the waves crashing against the promenade with the others – lovers, tourists, families, policemen, the have’s and the have-nots. A sense of calmness fills us all and even after 15 years, since I had last been here, it still remains the city’s best public space. Here one manages to switch into a different tempo, away from hustle and bustle of  Mumbai.

The sound of the ocean relieves us from the in-your-face realities. The humongous crowds, luxurious high rise apartments, pavement sleepers, the slums and all of this coexists side-by-side in this space crammed metropolis. Many proposals were made in the past to organise the hawkers, rejuvenate social housings and improve the lives of slum dwellers. Those plans have been washed away and new subtle signs of ‘Don’t Encourage Hawkers’ hang in the air. On the other hand, one can identify the bold initiatives, where plot after plot of public land gives way to yet another unimaginative high-rise, price per square-foot package. It’s a trajectory that gives a glimpse of the city’s drive to remain the financial capital of a nation. In an oceanic perspective, it doesn't matter if few more towers emerged as these boxed urbanism add little or no iconic value to one of the densest cities on earth. And, in- between all this, one finds all the goodness in the city’s constant effort to keep this prime promenade neat and tidy, with its well-proportioned tree lines, that is made available for use round the clock.  It feels like a sacred space that the city is dearly holding onto in its last hour, balancing to be in peace with itself

The natural and the Un-Natural, Mumbai

The Marine drive was conceived in 1915, a brainchild of Sir Phiroze Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy, who was no urban planner or politician, but a businessman. One wonders how he managed to get the plans through the political system, whilst the best of other public realm ideas remain unrealised. There is a fundamental need for more spaces such as this and less of vertically-stacked square footage, however the poor and the homeless are hoping for the opposite – a roof over their heads, a place to sleep at night.

Within five minutes of an abrupt shower, so typical of Mumbai where good things must be expected in no more than small packages, the granite edge is dry again for people to gather back. With its slick drain details and questionable construction tidiness of the curved edges, suggests that time and again efforts are being made to upgrade it.

Gateway for India (left), Mutton Chap Masala, Olympyia(right)

A gush of strong land and sea breeze provides the necessary fresh air to drive away the smell of fish cultivation in the nearby harbour. One can never forget the 5 am clean up trucks operating the Fort area that have the power to wake up the city gasping for oxygen. However, the very same harbour provides for the food joints such as Mahesh Lunch Home, Bade Miya and Olympia, that offer delightful local delicacies.

These look the same as before and are run with the typical half-polite-but-professional ‘Mumbaikar’ attitude. Should these have changed? Why should they? They are set apart from the luxurious five-star ,the Taj Palace , around the corner and have equally participated in resurrecting Mumbai back to life after the ghastly shootings of 2008. Could they have spruced up the place with new seats and tables? Perhaps, yes. Should they have changed the menu? Absolutely not! Serving to welcome all levels of society, they hold onto their invention without giving into corporate franchising. They bring to us the true essence of Mumbai where honest and tirelessly working individuals serve the city with quality and reasonable pricing.

Mumbai beats …. with a different pulse. After all these years, the waves of technology haven’t stolen the charm of its people. They refuse to change their way of living, perhaps for their own good.  Numerous urban legends can be heard in the busy local trains or the watering holes of Gokul, Leopolds & Mondegar. On a lucky day, if you bumped into a Mumbaikar with rare time in hand, they would speak proudly of the people moving into the city, whom they embrace as their own without prejudice. They would tell the tale on how these people arrived with no place to live, slept on the railway platforms and with grit, hard work and determination, rose to become great stars in its thriving film, financial and other industries. Thus, the dream to come here from far-off villages with the hope to find success, remains very real in the heart of every citizen.

Under this Colourful Umbrella of Hope, they soon realise that the path to such success in contemporary society involves professional hustling, cutthroat competition and ruthless efficiency – moving them further away from the calm of humanity.

So, perhaps, she's here on Marine drive looking far into the distant ocean in contemplation of another land. A land where quintessential are met more easily and where one can find more time to love and be loved again….

From Here On

As I go on….
I realise, days aren’t overlong
For often I've wondered astray,
At times from dusk to dawn.

As I look on…
I know, innocent loves long gone,
Perhaps a few we’d done wrong,
But that pain isn’t as strong.

As I move on….
I notice, only seconds hand on the clock’s long
whilst most reasons have had forgone.
And not all memories, haunt.

As I trot along…
I learn, to indulge in things 've longed,
Juggling memoirs are better than one held firm,
And in good company and will, life’s prolonged.

And as I hop back…
Cuz the ride is still on!
Fleetly joys to redeem,
This moment, and from here on…

Forever Wonder

Ever wonder about the star,
That which twinkles from afar,
Sparkling diamonds in your eyes,
Ignites your heart and dreams Alike.

If you wished to touch the star,
'Cuz it shines bright as the tsar.
The closer you get, the hotter it'll set,
Through your bones, the skin,
And the soul Akin!

But if you wished to be that star,
Learn to combust and raise the bar.
Seize your duties, glow with infinite rays,
Inspire minds and light their ways.

For those travellers in rugged paths,
Who are often caught in desert storms,
Raise their heads for hope above,
To ponder if in each of us,
There's strength to find ingenious paths,
And discover the mysteries of the Universe.

And to those who don't seize to risk it all,
Nor push themselves beyond the radar,
Will Forever Wonder from lightyears afar,
For what it is, but just a Star.....

A Touch of Human

So gentle a thing as water
Can cut through flesh when ice
The pleasingly rain in drought
Can anger n' wipe city’s throughout.

So pleasant the taste of honey
a risky sting disables you for day’s,
And the inspired merging of loved souls
Can leave heartache for decades.

So attained with reasons the intellect,
yet scant doubts impair friendships forever.
And young heartening ambitions,
those stern will, with time may fade.

So abundant are the earths resources
Yet hunger persists in every region,
And then beautiful life in itself,
often crumble to prosaic habits.

So in that very moment of discontent,
let your wisdom shine through,
And resist that eccentric revenge within,
to add a touch of human in you.

In times like corona

In times like corona,
worlds still from it’s routine.

We look both ways through windows gazing,
into empty roads, that we were once brazing,
But perhaps more into a search within,
for citation of anew beginning.

As age crosses us one more time,
all meticulous plans are put on arrest.
We bow our heads down to drawing board,
searching the pleasures of childhood known.

The treasures I find, lives in innovative work
of surgeons, thinkers, architects - the lot
And in this isolation of time,
may one find the rejoice
Under the shelter of an inquisitive mind.

If only

If only,
lies were all a mystery,
and truth was always history.
Wars were sold as fiction,
and compassion the daily news diction.

If only,
there was a currency of knowledge,
and an equation for peace.
Hunted treasures were lost souls,
and forgotten acts of kindnesses retold.

If only,
we fed on the power of sadness,
and dodged the dice of flattery.
We could imprison dogma,
to seize custody of our dreams.

Perhaps, only then
one could register the wonders,
of this radiant earth so gleam.

Teenage dream

Round n’ round we go
Scream n’ shout we did
Hop n’ hopped the ropes
Jump and jumped the bounds

Rip n’ ripped the boards
Rebelled n’ rebels we were
Chase n’ chased that will
Love and loved our thrills.

Fight n’ fought no cause
Smoke n’ smoked the fun
Pump n’ pumped we were
Its teen and teenage dreams

Taunt n’ haunt the kids
Old n’ the older still
Fast n’ faster we passed
each race and raced in time

Fly n’ flew we past
All times and timed age
the Passions n' passionate affairs
of the teens and teenage dreams.

Reverie

Flirting sunshine in shades of grey,
hints for a smile on a busy day.
Colored glasses reflecting a hidden soul,
by and by the smiles begin to grow.

Reduced tempo of the tapping toes,
pause awhile into sudden glare.
Absorbing fortunes from the star,
brings hope in you untold.

The shades of pastel with changing light,
reveals an art beyond the frame.
All travelers of searching soul,
draw close to a satisfying end.

As the clouds of doubts disappear,
to radiant gleam and twinkling eyes.
Looking at the heavens above,
we have, have found our dreams.

The intrepid

Oh what a fool I've been,
laying in memories for time being.
In the whole enchilada I see,
associates back to familiarity.
Have come a long long way,
thorough missions in a tragic past.
Haunting in the glory of bygone
wane to find anew each day.

But time is no excuse,
For the one that strives for verity,
if one is true to own divine,
there’s no pain but sovereignty.

As only a mighty
can fight the war of hope within,
to amend the very thought,
from slothful habitual undertaking.

It’s that slightest change
sets apart ones every resolution,
bringing life to a definitive conclusion.
Kindling the passions of love and accord,
to steer every consequential action.
and bring peace within mind and soul,
together they'd stay and live unafraid.

Legacy

In a world filled of amused melodies,
we’re often distracted by cacophony,
In a life engulfed in laughter,
many a brave have had shed a tear.

In reasons we believe,
yet words betray the truth,
In love we trust but,
the hate eats in you a bit.
In all wonders of coincidences,
at times we find ourselves offbeat.
In the youth of surprised enthusiasm,
memories and flesh wear out in time.
In dreams a future we revere,
but the past unsettles in you a bit.

Through a life of assured opportunities,
there are questions if we’re truly free.
For if the heavens quake to thunder,
tis only to soften the land under.
Then we must avenge all compromise and dogma,
and thus in our legacy we shall be free.

Cafe

Wondering at the lightning in shades of dismay
Will you ever find her a day?
What if these thoughts are a mere delusion
and that she was'nt born to date.

For this poem sake let us go on,
and consider she is amongst us here on.
Sitting beside in this very cafe,
reading a book with no acknowledgement of you at all

Should one stand up to address her
or continue on the coffee sitting here,
Feeling as though you were born a second ago,
with childish fear of the past you can’t seem to let go.

You wait and wait but time seems a still
and the lunch break nears an end,
But you continue to gaze at the beautiful soul
with an illusion your desk and work can wait.

Now one knows not the truth of life
or post this moment if you’ll seek her anymore,
Or if this magic that lifts your soul
would happen this once or ever again

Her hair at length falls down upon
and eyes that look up with no question at all,
You hope and hope for that glance of love
to look into you and smile just once...
As you stepped out that door together
the eyes met and acknowledged the other,
Before you turned and part seperate ways
for a moment she did make magic come real.

And perhaps you shall never meet again
But one is now sure that the hope of her
will never be 'Unreal'.

Truth

In search of truth, is all of mankind,
yet we know not the means to reach.
we see hunger and abundance share a common evil,
and young dreams of greatness, with time,
reduce to a blurry visions
of survival, power and fame.

Soon, too much cloud gathers over the horizon
delaying to reach your goals each-day.
Patience, is a virtue of the poor
and life itself belongs to the cruel survivor.
Words become a timeless cause,
for the one that choose to waste it all.

Energy as a form that is life
to be expended on creation and work alone.
All life then is not the chase but
a steady mesh knitted in time,
until the very end you’ve  weaved it through,
far too strong to be broken by mankind.

free-dome

In lonely walks and club house jives,
At office desks and sunny park dives,
We never stop nor hit a pause,
Continually think to weave our thoughts.

In the strangest sight and darkest hour,
All knit and stacked aside.
The slightest pain with shadowy joys,
Foolishly they play, yet together they lay.

With sudden twists, brings new  hope,
the twinkling eyes reveal your mind.
We choose to wind or with heads down and grind,
triggers a life with the past behind.

In many a thoughts, we let it astray,
twinging paths and numerous days,
An illusion that is time, allures the way,
For this freedom we lived, someone have had to pay.

the bout

If I pass by this tunnel of sorrow,
would I see the gleam of hope?
If you bought me anew life tomorrow,

could I then live so hollow?
For I was once a king too proud,
with knees afar from the ground,
but oh life you came so strong,
the earth never felt this bound.

Come rise my blood and pump those veins,
for I would then live again.
You know somehow that I shall win,
through courage of the lost king.
For I was born to live the dream,
and no one, not life, can stop that will.
The will to rise, the will to rule,
the will so strong, that life would kneel.
For I can see and I can do,
which makes all things, that is you.

FIND...

Many a years go passing by,
as the mind reads a possible illusion,
but through the vision it knows,
that you must change for a better tomorrow.

If you haven't found then don't u stop,
don't rest, just keep moving.
Life is just this once,
and through it one shall know,
neither heaven nor hell
can blow away,
the doings of a man on earth.

There are no ends to meet,
just the continuous living change
and the only thing you'll ever own,
is yourself.
So nurture, care, shape it
as your gift to the world.

Focus is the key,
say 'yes' more than 'no' in a day,
for things you're not sure.
In every question lies a hidden opportunity,
as you must be willing to lose.. to Find,

for no one knows how much you can…

Quick thoughts - a selection of random thoughts (keep visiting for more updates)

Architecture is perhaps more like the stock market, designed for long term benefits but all we managed was short term manupilation....

After all, what is architecture if not the reflection of who we are. When u look in the mirror and not like a particular aspect, you know you must change it immediately!

Dare to DREAM....

Buildings have inspired people and more often they do establish our model of existence of as a fact[1] (an event in time) in the ever changing world. It is perhaps so, because it allows a visit in the past for which we travel longer distances just to view such man-made objects.[2] Such is the power of a building that it generates emotions in the human consciousness and encourages you to displace yourself.
But not every building is worth a visit. The question of timeless architecture has been often asked in universities and a model through which it can be achieved. To achieve it, is perhaps an architect’s/builders lifelong dream. In the last 20 years, we have built more than we possibly could compared to the past 1000 years, but the ratio of achieving masterpieces have reduced considerably. It is true that there are very few modern buildings that would inspire you to travel for a visit. Is there something that we (designers) are doing differently wrong?
Education as much as it is a necessity for awareness, it can also be a curse in disguise, for we can only choose to register the past. The nature of innovation is such that one must disobey and contradict everything that lay before us. The new can never be justified with the reference of the past; it must emerge like any other, from minds that are free from fear and dogma. Therefore the focus of justifying ones design to others (usually pier, colleagues or huries) in reference to appreciation is a clear dogma that the profession of architecture is suffering from today. The system of assessments in most universities are set up, in which at the end of the episode one presents himself in front of juries and people and based on their response (good or bad) the result is declared. But I think the primary importance of universities must be to teach you ‘how to’ learn and not ‘what to’ learn.
Every year more and more ambitious architects graduate to achieve a dream which is soon shattered by the real world; it somehow pushes them back to take shelter under the knowledge of the past. And the inevitable result is to produce buildings that are more average than before. The truth is, to achieve something of equal or more beauty one must think beyond the object that it holds in comparison. One must be ready to foolishly play, as the dots can only be connected backwards.
Its always very easy to demolish a new idea, as it is difficult to justify with history and therefore is attacked by more experienced men in business and sometimes the financial crisis of the designer. But to pursue it further, to take it a level beyond the one presented, one needs courage, persistence and most importantly self belief. This is what makes the wonders of this world. The choice is always yours. Dare to Dream...
